California Leave Laws Virtual Seminar Kicks Off on Thursday

Leaves of AbsenceUnlike most states, California has many unique leave laws. Managing these leaves of absence in compliance with California law can get confusing for even large employers with a dedicated human resources staff—especially since required and optional leaves can overlap with each other.

California’s complex leave laws have a broad reach. Many of these laws apply to all employers regardless of size, while some of the bigger, job-protected leave entitlements apply only to employers with five or more employees. Leaves of absence are a common topic within the state legislature, and changes to California’s leave laws occur frequently.

To help employers make sense of the different types of leaves and any legal requirements that apply to them, the California Chamber of Commerce is running a two-day live virtual seminar on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10.

New dates have been added. Please note: There is no recording associated with this virtual seminar so be sure to attend the live training.

The “Leaves of Absence: Making Sense of It All” seminar will demystify common and more difficult-to-resolve leave administration issues, such as:

  • Discussion of both paid leave and unpaid leave;
  • Eligibility requirements;
  • Required notices and other leave administration documentation;
  • Leave interaction;
  • When employers must continue health benefits; and
  • How an employee can receive wage replacement benefits while on leave.

CalChamber labor law experts will also speak specifically to new and existing California and federal laws regarding:

  • Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL);
  • California mandatory paid sick leave;
  • COVID-19-related sick leave;
  • Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA);
  • Recently expanded California Family Rights Act (CFRA);
  • Leave as a reasonable accommodation for a disability;
  • State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL); and
  • Other leaves such as PTO, vacation, jury duty and military service.

To avoid penalties or costly litigation, it’s essential to understand all required and optional leaves of absence, plus any overlapping California and federal legal requirements.
