Chambers of commerce are front-line advocates for communities and the entrepreneurs who keep our economy strong. CalChamber is a proud supporter of these vital partners, and is celebrating “Support Your Local Chamber Day” on Oct. 15.
We asked Rana Ghadban, our vice president of small business advocacy, to answer five important questions about the work of local chambers. She joined CalChamber in April after spending more than 15 years leading local chambers in several communities across California.
Q: How would you describe the mission of these local organizations?
A: Local chambers of commerce exist to strengthen the economic and civic vitality of their communities. Their mission is rooted in helping businesses thrive—because when businesses succeed, communities prosper. They serve as a unifying voice for the local business community, working to create an environment where entrepreneurs, employers, and residents can grow and succeed together.
Q: What kinds of services do local chambers of commerce provide for the businesses in their communities?
A: Local chambers provide a wide range of services that support businesses at every stage—from startups to major employers. They offer networking opportunities and marketing visibility, but they also play a critical role in advocacy—ensuring local business interests are represented at the local, state, and federal levels. Many chambers also help businesses navigate regulations and access workforce development programs.
Q: Beyond their member businesses, do local chambers play other roles in their communities?
A: Absolutely. Chambers often serve as community conveners and problem-solvers. They bring together leaders from business, education, government, and nonprofits to address local challenges—whether it’s workforce shortages, housing, or economic mobility. Chambers also foster collaboration and civic engagement within their communities.
Q: Can you tell us a little about the relationship between CalChamber and local chambers across California?
A: The California Chamber of Commerce and local chambers share a strong partnership built on a common mission: advancing policies that help businesses and the economy thrive. CalChamber serves as the statewide voice of business at the Capitol, providing policy leadership, compliance tools, and resources that empower local chambers to serve their members effectively. In turn, local chambers amplify CalChamber’s advocacy by mobilizing business leaders in their regions—ensuring that Sacramento hears the voices of communities across the state.
Q: Your background is in leadership at the local chamber level. Why are these organizations so essential to the state’s economic success?
A: Local chambers are the front lines of economic development. They understand the unique needs of their communities and the industries that drive local growth. By supporting small businesses, advocating for business-friendly policies, and connecting employers with talent, chambers strengthen California’s overall economic fabric. When local chambers succeed in building vibrant, resilient economies, the entire state benefits.
