Georgia is a country located in Eastern Europe and Western Asia, bordered by the Black Sea to the West, Russia to the North and East, Turkey to the Southwest, Armenia to the South, and Azerbaijan to the Southeast. Georgia has a population of 3.708 million and a GDP of $18.63 billion in 2021.
Georgie is a developing country and is classified as “very high” on the Human Development Index. Economic reforms since Georgia’s independence have led to higher levels of economic freedom and reductions in corruption, poverty, and unemployment. Georgia is a member of the Council of Europe, Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, and other international organizations. Georgia applied to join the European Union in March of 2022.
U.S. exports to Georgia totaled $1.2 billion in 2022, almost double the $656 million in 2021. The top export category was used or secondhand merchandise which accounted for $888 million of all exports. Other top exports included transportation equipment, processed foods, and chemicals. Imports from Georgia into the U.S. totaled $341 million in 2022. Top imports included primary metal manufactures, which made up $247 million of the total, followed by chemicals and beverage and tobacco products.
California exports to Georgia totaled $202 million in 2022. Top exports include used or secondhand merchandise, which account for $143 million of the total, followed by transportation equipment, and agricultural products. Imports from Georgia into California totaled $12 million in 2022, with $10 million in primary metal manufactures alone.
US direct investment into Georgia totaled $16 million in 2021, while Georgian FDI into the U.S. totaled $1 million in the same year.
