Trade Background: Japan

Tourism from Japan to the United States, particularly California, is a major industry as well, with revenue reaching $1.184 billion in 2016, according to the California Travel and Tourism Commission. Approximately 591,000 Japanese tourists visited California with an average spending of $2,000.

U.S. exports to Japan were over $63 billion in 2016, making it the fourth largest export destination for the U.S.​

California continues to be the top exporting state to Japan, accounting for nearly 20% of total US exports. Japan has remained California’s fourth largest export market since 2010, after Mexico, Canada and China. California exports to Japan, the world’s third largest economy, totaled $11.765 billion in 2016.
