The State of Kuwait borders Iraq to the North and Saudi Arabia to the South. In 2019, the population of Kuwait totaled 4.2 million people and the GDP was $134.6 billion. Kuwait is a high income country backed by the world’s sixth largest oil reserves.
In 2020, the U.S. exported $2.2 billion to Kuwait, 28.6% of which was made up of transportation equipment, followed by 15.4% computer and electronic products, 11% non-electrical machinery, and 9.2% chemicals. The U.S. imported $657 million from Kuwait in 2020. The top import was oil and gas making up 57% of the total, followed by petroleum and coal products at 18.9%, reimports at 16.7%, and chemicals at 6.6%.
U.S. foreign direct investment into Kuwait totaled $398 million in 2019. Kuwait FDI into the U.S. totaled $1.8 billion the same year.
In 2020, California exported $162.6 million to Kuwait. Computer and electronic products made up the largest export making up 24.4% of the total, followed by agricultural products at 17.7%, food manufactures at 13.5%, and chemicals at 12.1%. In 2020, California imported $310.6 million from Kuwait. The top import was oil and gas making up 71.1% of the total, followed by reimports at 20.3%.
