In 2021, the U.S. exported $3.03 billion to Kuwait, $1.15 billion of which was made up of transportation equipment, followed by $336 million of computer and electronic products, $297 million of oil and gas, and $234 million of non-electrical machinery. The U.S. imported $1.07 billion from Kuwait in 2021. The top import was oil and gas making up $532 million of the total, followed by petroleum and coal products at $441 million, reimports at $66 million, and chemicals at $29 million.U.S. foreign direct investment into Kuwait totaled $398 million in 2019. Kuwait FDI into the U.S. totaled $1.8 billion the same year.

California-Kuwait Trade

In 2021, California exported $185 million to Kuwait. Computer and electronic products made up the largest export making up $43 million of the total, followed by transportation equipment at $29 million, agricultural products at $26 million, and chemicals at $25 million. In 2020, California imported $310.6 million from Kuwait. The top import was oil and gas making up 71.1% of the total, followed by reimports at 20.3%.

Foreign Direct Investment

U.S. FDI into Kuwait totaled $656 million in 2020, while FDI from Kuwait into the U.S. totaled $1.56 billion the same year, making Kuwait the 8th fastest-growing source of FDI into the U.S. Kuwaiti-owned firms supported 1,700 jobs in the U.S. in 2019. Top industry sectors include transportation and chemicals.
