Trade Overview
The State of Kuwait borders Iraq to the North and Saudi Arabia to the South. In 2021, the population of Kuwait totaled 4.25 million people and the GDP was $105.96 billion. Kuwait is a high income country backed by the world’s sixth largest oil reserves.

In 2022, the U.S. exported $3.3 billion to Kuwait, $1.18 billion of which was made up of transportation equipment, followed by $608 million of oil and gas, $271 million of processed foods, and $260 million of computers and electronic products The U.S. imported $2.05 billion from Kuwait in 2022, almost double the $1.07 billion in 2021. The top imports were petroleum and coal products at $942 million and oil and gas making up $858 million of the total.
California-Kuwait Trade
In 2022, California exported $171 million to Kuwait. Agricutlural products made up the largest export making up $34 million of the total, followed by computer and electronic products at $27 million, petroleum and coal products at $23 million, and chemicals at $21 million.
In 2022, California imported $310 million from Kuwait. The top import was oil and gas making up 80% of the total, followed by reimports at 19.6%.
Foreign Direct Investment
U.S. FDI into Kuwait totaled $587 million in 2021, while FDI from Kuwait into the U.S. totaled $1.59 billion the same year. Kuwaiti-owned firms supported 1,700 jobs in the U.S. in 2020. Top industry sectors include transportation and chemicals.
