Afghanistan is a landlocked country with much of its land covered by the Hindu Kush mountain range, which experience harsh winters, and deserts in the south that experience hot summers. Afghanistan has a population of 42.24 million as of 2023. It’s GDP is $14.5 billion as of 2022.
Update:
Trade between the U.S. and Afghanistan has decreased since the Taliban occupation in 2021, with the U.S. Embassy in Kabul suspending operations on August 31, 2021. Since the Taliban takeover in August 2021, the United States has stopped providing assistance for the purpose of the reconstruction of Afghanistan, per the U.S. Department of State.
U.S. – Afghanistan Trade
The United States exported $50 million to Afghanistan in 2023, down from $236 million in 2020. Agricultural products made up 33 million of the total. This was followed by processed foods ($5 million), computer and electronic products ($4 million), other special classification provisions ($2 million), and chemicals ($1 million).
The U.S. imported a total of $20 million from Afghanistan in 2023. Imports consisted of processed foods ($9 million), textile mills products ($5 million), agricultural products ($3 million), beverages & tobacco products ($1 million), and used or secondhand merchandise ($1 million) U.S. Department of Commerce.
California – Afghanistan Trade
California exported $8 million to Afghanistan in 2023. Top exports were processed foods ($3 million), agricultural products ($3 million), chemicals ($1 million), and transportation equipment and computer and electronic products at less than $1 million.
In 2023, California imported $6 million worth of products from Afghanistan. Top imports were processed foods ($2 million), textile mills products ($2 million), agricultural products ($1 million), and beverages & tobacco products and products supporting agriculture and forestry at less than $ 1 million.
