Trade Overview
Egypt spans the northeast corner of Africa and is considered a Mediterranean country. Egypt is considered a cradle of civilization, as it’s able to trace its history back longer than any other country. Islam is the official religion of Egypt and Arabic the official language, although there is a significant Christian minority in the country. The population of Egypt is 112.71 million, making it the most populous country in North Africa, the Middle East, and the Arab world, and the third most populous in Africa. The Sahara Desert makes up large regions of Egyptian land.
Egyptian GDP was $395.93 billion in 2023. It’s economy is the second or third largest in Africa, in competition with South Africa, and one of the largest and most diversified in the Middle East. (Bureau of Economic Analysis).
U.S. – Egypt Trade
U.S. exports to Egypt in 2023 totaled $4.49 billion. This included $902 million worth of chemicals. Transportation equipment another $807 million, $586 million agricultural products, $355 million in minerals & ores, and non-electrical machinery at $354 million.
The U.S.’s imports from Egypt were $2.39 billion in 2023, with apparel and accessories totaling $1.09 billion. This was followed by processed foods, primary metals manufactures, chemicals and textile mill products, which made $350 million, $249 million, $131 million, and $128 respectively. California-Egypt Trade
California exports to Egypt totaled $143 million in 2023. Computer and electronic products made up $41 million, followed by agricultural products made up $37 million, non-electrical machinery with $22 million, processed foods at $10 million, and transportation equipment at $7 million.
Imports from Egypt to California totaled $210 million in 2023. $92 million of which was processed foods. The next largest import was apparel and accessories making up $80 million of the total. This was followed by textile mill products at $12 million, non-metallic mineral products at $11 million, and plastics and rubber products $3 million (U.S. Department of Commerce).
FDI – Egypt
In 2023, the U.S invested $13.7 billion in Egypt, an almost 20% increase from 2022. In this same year, Egypt invested $38 million.
