CalChamber President and CEO Jennifer Barrera Keynotes Riverside Chamber Event

News

Last week, California Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jennifer Barrera headlined Good Morning Riverside, a monthly program of the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.

More than 200 participants gathered at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa for the event. The agenda featured updates from the City of Riverside; University of California, Riverside; and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona—among others—showcasing the positive partnerships and projects that are driving the Inland Empire’s economy.

Barrera provided an overview of the legislative session, including the status of CalChamber job killer bills. She thanked Riverside Chamber CEO Nicholas Adcock, his team and their membership for the continued support and partnership with the CalChamber. From their work on getting compliance resources to small businesses, to engaging on critical legislation and helping to launch the Big City Chambers Coalition, the Riverside Chambers are a key ally.

Illustrating that partnership, Barrera discussed AB 1000 (Reyes; D-San Bernardino), a job killer bill that would have significantly curtailed California’s logistics industry, an important economic sector for Riverside and the Inland Empire. Working collectively with business association allies, large and small companies, and local governments, California’s business community was able to defeat this bill early in the legislative process.

The lesson of that effort is clear: it’s now more important than ever that legislators hear directly from the small businesses in their districts and their advocates on matters that impact their operations and their regions. Furthermore, it’s incumbent on the business community to create the broadest and most diverse coalitions to stop legislation that threatens jobs and prosperity for all Californians.

Barrera also applauded the political engagement in the region, and the efforts to elect a pro-jobs legislative delegation.
