Trade Overview

Afghanistan is a landlocked country with much of its land covered by the Hindu Kush Mountain range, which experiences harsh winters, and deserts in the south that experience hot summers. Afghanistan has a population of 43.84 million as of 2025. It’s GDP is $17.78 billion as of 2024 (most recent data) according to the World Bank.

U.S. – Afghanistan Trade

Two-way goods trade between the U.S. and Afghanistan totaled $46 million, with exports from the United States totaling $11 million to Afghanistan in 2025. Top exports were chemicals ($4 million), miscellaneous manufactures ($2 million), computer and electronic products ($1 million), agriculture products ($1 million), and processed foods ($1 million).

The U.S. imported a total of $35 million from Afghanistan in 2024. Imports consisted of processed foods ($12 million), textile mills products ($6 million), used or secondhand merchandise ($6 million), agricultural products ($4 million), and goods returned ($2 million) U.S. Department of Commerce.

California exported $2 million to Afghanistan in 2025. Top exports were chemicals ($1 million), electrical equipment, appliances and components ($653,000), processed foods ($229,000), computer and electronic products ($186,000), and plastics and rubber products ($78,000).

In 2025, California imported $7 million worth of products from Afghanistan. Top imports were processed foods ($3 million), textile mills products ($1 million), beverages & tobacco products ($1 million), agricultural products ($723,000), and used and secondhand merchandise ($345,000).
