U.S. Senate Passes Peru Free Trade Agreement
The U.S. Senate passed the U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement (FTA) yesterday. The Senate voted 77-18 on December 4 to approve the agreement, which will ensure that the United States will continue to gain access to world markets, resulting in an improved economy and additional employment of Americans. The FTA received a "yes" vote from California Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-San Francisco) and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Greenbrae) voted "no." Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez issued the following statement applauding the U.S. Senate passage of the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement. "I commend Chairman Baucus, Senator Grassley and the U.S. Senate for its overwhelming support of the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement. Gutierrez and Schwab Travel to China for JCCT and Trade Talks Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez and U.S. Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab will travel to Beijing, China next week for the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) to be held Dec.11. The JCCT, a high-level government-to-government dialogue, seeks to open market opportunities and resolve trade disputes. U.S. Department of Agriculture officials will also participate in the JCCT. Senate passes Peru free trade deal -
Legislation is good news
for small U.S. exporters.
The Senate approved a free trade agreement with Peru yesterday by a vote of 77 to 18, clearing the way for the deal to become law within weeks. While U.S. labor and environmental advocates generally opposed the deal, some small businesses cheered the idea of opening up another market for their products. A bilateral FTA that will lower tariffs and foster increased trade between both countries. A U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement is a critical element of the U.S. strategy to liberalize trade through multilateral, regional and bilateral initiatives. The agreement will also increase momentum toward lowering trade barriers and set a positive example for other small economies in the Western Hemisphere.
