CalChamber Hosts Hong Kong Commissioner
The California Chamber of Commerce yesterday hosted Margaret Fong, Hong Kong commissioner, at an international luncheon forum. Commissioner Fong described Hong Kong as the window of China and door to the world, and specifically addressed Hong Kong’s strong economic ties with California.

Fidel Castro to Step Down as Cuba's Leader
Cuban leader Fidel Castro told compatriots early today that he would not accept another term as president, throwing open the Communist-ruled island's leadership for the first time in nearly 50 years. Castro, 81, and ailing with an undisclosed intestinal disorder, announced in a statement carried on the state-run Granma International newspaper website early today that he was stepping down as head of state. The United States and major European powers formally recognized Kosovo on Monday, but fears of fueling secessionist movements around the world undercut their efforts to project a broader front of support for what they regard as Europe's newest state.

U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement
A bilateral FTA that will lower tariffs and foster increased trade between both countries. A U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement is a critical element of the U.S. strategy to liberalize trade through multilateral, regional and bilateral initiatives. The agreement will also increase momentum toward lowering trade barriers and set a positive example for other small economies in the Western Hemisphere.

California Legislation SJR 22 (Wiggins) California’s Wine Industry This measure would request the United States Department of the Treasury's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau withdraw the Notices of Proposed Rulemaking Number 77, relating to a Proposed Establishment of the Calistoga Viticultural Area , and Number 78, relating to a Proposed Revision of the American Viticultural Area Regulations, because they pose a threat to the state and national wine industry's ability to fairly trade domestically and internationally.
