Politico, October 20, 2023

Gov. Gavin Newsom visited Israel on Friday (10/20/23) where he met with President Herzog and condemned the terror attack on Southern Israel and expressed his solidarity with the people of Israel and those impacted by the violence.

In his statement, the Governor said “Despite the horror, what I saw and heard from the people of Israel was a profound sense of resilience. A commitment to community and common purpose, especially in these most difficult of times. That's the Israeli spirit. And it's also the California spirit…”

Newsom was one of the first governors to release a supporting statement to the people who were affected by the vicious terror attack and approved a special shipping of medical supplies and humanitarian aid to the region.

Before leaving for Israel, Newsom authorized an additional $20 million in state funding to provide physical security enhancements to California-based nonprofit organizations — like synagogues and mosques — that are at high risk for violent attacks and hate crimes.

Governor Gavin Newsom laid down his lawmaking pen the night of October 13 after signing 890 new laws into effect, and vetoing another 156, including three California Chamber of Commerce job killer bills. The CalChamber tracked more than 700 bills this year, formally opposing more than 100. Most of the legislation the CalChamber opposed was either stopped or amended to address concerns.

Of 19 job killer bills identified this year, the Legislature sent seven to the Governor, who signed four of those bills into law. At the urging of the CalChamber, the Governor rejected three job killer bills.
